Jasmine Bolding - Student Social Worker

When I found out that I was going to be doing my placement within a school, I was hesitant as I didn't want to be working within classrooms. However, that soon changed. Working within St Marys has helped me to gain a wealth of experience that I never thought I would be able to gain within a school setting. It has been great seeing things from a pastoral point of view, as I never realised how things operate behind the scenes at a school. The team are very supportive and have helped me gain a better understanding of the different aspects that make up social work. One word of adviceis don't judge a book by its cover and make the most of the opportunities.

Before starting my placement at St Mary's I had limited experience with working with children as I had always worked with adults. However, this all changed the day I stepped foot into St Mary's. Every day I was able to develop and gain new knowledge and skills and throw myself into new challenges. I was able to use my creativity for interventions and direct work with the children. I worked with different staff within the school to help build my skills and confidence to create assessments and help with decision making.

I was given amazing opportunities to work with other agencies such as working with Early Help, Children Services and the food bank. I worked alongside the PIP team weekly so I was able to support families. I am so happy that all the skills I learned throughout my time at St Mary's have now transferred with me into my next placement. I am very grateful that I was able to be a part of such a fantastic school.
